Using your mobile phone while driving can be electronically monitored from Monday. That’s right. The Directorate General of Traffic, otherwise known as Muroor, announced the latest ordeal on Tuesday. 

Even touching your mobile phone while driving can result in fines 

Touching your mobile phone while driving is considered a traffic violation now too, which can result in a fine of SAR150 for the first offense. This fine could then increase up to SAR300 with possibilities of the violator being detained for 24 hours. 

Seatbelts will also be electronically monitored from Monday 

Drivers without seatbelts will also be subject to fines from Monday, according to Saudi Gazette. Cameras have been installed along roads to detect drivers who use their phones by the Traffic Department. The reason for this new law and installation of specific cameras is due to a study that showed the use of mobile phones is one of the main causes of most major car accidents in the Kingdom. 

So, this means the cameras can also detect motorists who don’t use their seatbelts.

The use of mobile phones while driving was banned in the Kingdom back in 2015.
