For an entire month in a year, Muslims around the world join together in the act of fasting to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad in the Holy Month of Ramadan.
The start date of the Islamic month has been predicted to possibly start on Tuesday, May 15 till Thursday, June 14.
In Ramadan, Hajj pilgrimage is also performed by muslims who are in good health and can afford to undergo the journey to Mecca in Saudi Arabia.
During the Holy Month of Ramadan, all the Muslims will be performing one of the five pillars of Islam as they fast from any food and drink from sunrise to sunset.
The act of fasting also brings about two concepts: Iftar and Suhoor – Iftar is the first meal after sunset to have to break one’s fasting and Suhoor is the last meal just before sunrise to start the day of fasting.
During the Holy Month, muslims usually break their fast with some dates, dried fruits and Ramadan juices, like the famous Vimto or a yogurt based drink, before heading off to the evening prayer.
At most times, you can expect lots of food laid out on the dining table with the whole family gathered around to have Iftar all together.
You can also visit lots of the Ramadan tents set up around the country to enjoy some food and shisha just in time for Suhoor.
Lots of people also engage in the charitable spirit during Ramadan and donate food, drinks and/or money.
Organisations also set up Ramadan tents and camps to give out care packages to charity.
