Saudi Women Are Sharing Their Thoughts And Preferences On Their Mahr In A Now Trending Twitter Hashtag

A new topic has emerged in the Saudi twitter-sphere, this time one that asked the women of the country about their personal requests on their mahr once they’re to get married.

A mahr in Islam is the mandatory payment (either in the form of money or another possession) by the groom or his father for the bride upon marriage. Most endow their marriages in terms of money but it’s really anything that the bride agrees to.

Examples of this can either be a house, jewelry, land or even something not as ostentatious, like furniture.

The hashtag #كم_تطلبين_مهر_اذا_جاك_عريس sparked the conversation between women and men in Saudi

The trending hashtag asks, “How much would you want for your mahr if you were to get married?” which resulted in several thousand replies from women around the Kingdom.

Naturally, a good number of women responded with specific amounts and humorous reasonings behind it. Some could be serious requests, others seemed like a a humorous take in responding to the question.

“SAR 500,000 , if you accept that or you can go”

“SAR100,000, a house and spending the honeymoon outside the country. That’s all!

Some women took the romantic approach to answering this question

“If the one in my mind came, I’d give him a discount lol”

“If I love him and he does the same, I don’t care about the mahr. If there’s a true love between us -not that kind of traditional marriage- I won’t care about mahr, travelling and money. The one who loves and respects love will understand me.”

Someone give this woman a medal.

Others simply couldn’t even

“I’m not for sale.”

One user expressed her view on the concept of a mahr
