Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir said on Sunday that the Custodian of The Two Holy Mosques King Salman is determined to hold accountable those responsible in the case regarding the late journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
According to Saudi Gazette, Al-Jubeir told FOX News in an interview that the killing of the journalist inside the consulate in Istanbul was a “huge and grave mistake” and promised Khashoggi’s family that those responsible will be punished.
“This is a terrible mistake. This is a terrible tragedy. Our condolences go out to them. We feel their pain,” Jubeir said during the interview with Fox News.
When asked about the disappearance and occurrences that led to Khashoggi’s death, Al-Jubeir said that the Kingdom has been open with the information and “will continue putting out information on the case, as soon as it becomes available.” He stressed that this is an ongoing investigation and results will take time.
“The individuals who did this, did it outside the scope of their authority, and what compounded the mistake was the attempt to try to cover up,” Jubeir told Fox.
“We don’t know, in terms of details, how. We don’t know where the body is,” Jubeir said, adding that the Saudi public prosecutor had put out orders to detain 18 individuals, “the first step in a long journey.”
“We are determined to uncover every stone. We are determined to find out all the facts. We are determined to punish all those responsible for this murder.”
When asked about the Kingdom’s relationship with the US since the incident, he said “that the Saudi-US ties would “weather” the Khashoggi case. “That is unacceptable in any government. These things unfortunately happen. We want to make sure that those who are responsible are punished and we want to make sure we have procedures in place to prevent it from happening again.”
“For the past 80+ years, since the founding of the modern Saudi State, we have never engaged in such behavior and we will never engage in such behavior,” Jubeir told Fox News.
