With the recent developments and positive reforms going through the Kingdom under King Salman’s reign- things can still surprise even the best of us. The Custodian of The Two Holy Mosques King Salman welcomed Iraq’s prime minister, Haider Al- Abadi, in Riyadh yesterday, according to Saudi Press Agency.

The trip hopes to conclude a more ‘enhanced strategic tie’ between the two countries, who were once too distant. The Prime Minister of Iraq waas received at the royal palace, along with his delegation.

Recently, Saudi-based airline Flynas, announced opening up a route to Baghdad starting the 30th of October

The airline even landed in Baghdad on Wednesday, after a very long ‘interruption’. Many people were surprised, due to the fact that Saudi Arabian airlines have not landed in Iraq after 25 YEARS, according to Sabq.

A meeting will be held on Sunday to establish the cooperation between Saudi and Iraq

Several reports have confirmed that the two countries are looking into enhancing their relationship. Although this is a first in a long time, that anyone in seat has visited the Kingdom, Saudi foreign minister Adel Al- Jubair actually visited Iraq’s capital in February.

And when was the last time that (visit by a Saudi official to Iraq) happened, you ask?

1991.

Why?

Following Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait in 1990, Saudi’s city Riyadh put a halt to its cooperations with Baghdad- even closing border posts on the northern neighbors. This halt turned into a few years that extended into more, since the 2003 events of US invasions to Iraq took place.

What does this mean for Iraq AND for Saudi?

This might mean a boost in economic benefits once Iraq’s relationship with Saudi Arabia strengthens. Meawhile, Saudi Arabia could also counter Iranian influence in Iraw.

For both, this enhancement of the two countries’ economic collaborations could help to boost oil prices, according to Arab News.
