Jeddah’s Hajj Hackathon has been in the news since its announcement – from Japanese participants dressed in Saudi garbs to rumors doing the rounds that it would be the largest hackathon in the Middle East.
But now it has got another reason to be in the news as the Hajj Hackathon broke the Guinness World Record for the most participants in a software development jam in a Hackathon.

According to the Khaleej Times, Saudi Arabia broke the record that was previously held by India that saw 2,577 participants participating in a software development jam back in 2012.
The current Guinness World Records certificate read “The most participants in a hackathon was achieved by Saudi Federation for Cybersecurity, Programming, and Drones (Saudi Arabia), in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on 1 August 2018.”

The hackathon was held so that participants can come up with solutions that would make for a more efficient Hajj. The focus areas were crowd management, traffic control, housing, travel and communication amongst others.
