In like with the National Transformation Program 2020 and Vision 2030, the Kingdom has launched an initiative to reduce food waste, Saudi Gazette reported on Tuesday. The Saudi Grains Organisation (SAGO) launched the initiative that aims to make use of the country’s natural resources in the most effective ways.

Policies will also be established by SAGO to result in less waste reduction. A press conference held in Riyadh recently discussed the training that will be provided to private sector stakeholders on measure of reducing food waste. Drafting the legislative framework to put forward the new rules regarding food waste is also in the works.
The initiative director to SAGO, Zaid Al- Shabanat, said that they wasting food is an uncivilised behavior and their “initiative aims to reduce wastage on wheat, rice, dates, fruits, vegetables, red and white meat.”

There will be five phases to this new initiative, with the first being a field study to measure the food waste in society. The study will be conducted by Prince Muhammed Bin Saud Islamic University and will focus on the tendencies in food waste across 27 cities.
