The Hijri New Year has been a well-anticipated occasion and now that it is finally here, Saudis are welcoming it with warm wishes for a prosperous year ahead.
Saudi Twitter thoroughly welcomed the 1,440 years since Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) and his companions migrated from Makkah to Madinah, with a trending hashtag #سنه_جديده_1440هـ.
If you aren’t familiar with Al Hijri, it is basically an annual commemoration of the amount of years since Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) migrated along with his companions to Madinah, one of Islam’s holiest cities (located in Saudi Arabia.) This was known as the Hijra, giving the new year its name.
The migration took place in the year 622.
So, today marks the beginning of a new Islamic calendar year, and today starts the year 1440.
