The Kingdom has officially announced that those who produce or even forward content that is disruptive to the usual public order can be punished by up to five years in prison and a SAR3 million fine.

Social media use has come such a long way that it seems none of us really keep private anymore. From viral videos, challenges, to silly memes, gifs- they’re fun but some have seemingly forgotten to keep limits when it comes to usage of this.

Thankfully, with new laws such as this, people will be more careful with whatever sensitive or disturbing content they forward or share to the public online sphere.

Producing and even distributing those type of content is considered cybercrime

According to Saudi Gazette, the Public Prosecution announced via Twitter on Monday that anyone who produces, sends or forwards anything that makes a mockery, or is satirical and provokes to disrupt public order through social networking sites or other types of technology is subject to the fines and punishments.

“Producing and distributing content that ridicules, mocks, provokes and disrupts public order, religious values and public morals through social media … will be considered a cybercrime punishable by a maximum of five years in prison and a fine of SAR3 million.”
