The Government Has Announced An Aim To Eliminate Illiteracy By 2024

On to bigger things this week as Saudi plans to completely wipe off illiteracy by 2024. With programs and conjoined efforts by leaders throughout the years, the rate of illiteracy has been reduced at a larger scale since 1972.

“In 1972, Illiteracy rate was 60%. Today it’s 5.6%”

The illiteracy rate in Saudi Arabia today is less than 5.6%, according to government data sourced by Saudi Gazette.

What has Saudi done to eradicate it so far?

Well, for starters… 

  • The Adult Education and Literacy System was announced in 1972, which ultimately lead to the establishment of the General Secretariat for Adult Education and Literacy in 1977. 
  • Saudi won the King Sejong award for Literacy in 1986. 
  • The Kingdom won two more awards in 1996 and 1997 for Unesco and Noma Literacy Prize.
  • Crown Prince MBS’ Vision 2030 is an inspiration to the Kingdom’s academic reforms 
  • The Saudi Budget of 2018 put aside SAR192 billion on education alone.

This year, this is what’s in the works towards that aim

Saudi students are going to partake in the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) for the first time ever. Additionally, the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) will celebrate Arab Literacy Day on January 8.
