Following Sunday’s media reports mentioning that Saudi’s top senior cleric claimed that women should not have to be forced to wear the abaya during a radio programme on Friday. Sheikh Abdullah Al Mutlaq put the rumors and false media reports to rest, by clarifying that he did not call on women to remove the hijab, his talk was ‘directed to all muslims, I call on women to dress modestly.”

In this, he mentions that ‘whatever is worn must fullfill the conditions of the hijab according to the sharee’ah, regardless of what it’s called’. He also went on to discuss that each society have their own dressing style but as long as the dress fullfills the requirements, it’s fine. Sheikh Abdullah Al Mutlaq also emphasized on the importance of a person maintaining their respectability via comporting with the norms of one’s society.
The cleric, in his official statement, mentioned his surprise at how his words were misrepresented by the media and thanked whoever took the time to clarify from him.
