2 Researchers In Sharjah Invented Futuristic Sensors That Can Detect Pollutants & Viruses

Farah Makhlouf

Two brilliant minds from the American University of Sharjah invented something revolutionary that will improve the quality of life. Dr. Rana Sabouni and Dr. Mehdi Ghommem, faculty members in Chemical and Mechanical Engineering respectively, worked collaboratively with the University of Waterloo in Canada.

Their brainchild? A revolutionary sensor that possesses the remarkable ability to detect both environmental pollutants and viruses

Yes, you read that right – a single device capable of safeguarding health and the environment simultaneously.

Dr. Ghommem elaborates on their groundbreaking projects: “We’re working on two important sensing projects. In the first one, we’re developing a gas sensor to quickly detect CO2 leaks in workplaces where there could be safety risks. In the second one, we’re creating portable devices that can rapidly detect viruses, like COVID-19, without the need for bulky lab equipment.”

These innovations hold the potential to transform the way humans protect themselves and the environment.

Imagine workplaces becoming safer thanks to quick and efficient CO2 leak detection, or communities gaining access to easy virus testing without the hassle of extensive lab procedures

Dr. Rana Sabouni and Dr. Mehdi Ghommem have truly lit the torch of progress, and their inventions will definitely make the world a healthier and safer place. Cheers to innovation and the researchers making it happen!
