In a major boost for Sharjah’s sports infrastructure, H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, the Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has officially approved the designs and location for a new Sports City. The announcement was made by Ali bin Shaheen Al Suwaidi, a member of the Executive Council and Head of The Sharjah Department of Public Works (SDPW), during a recent phone interview on the “Direct Line” program, aired on Sharjah Radio and Television.

Al Suwaidi revealed that the Ruler personally sketched the design for the ambitious project, which will be situated at a strategically chosen location selected by Sheikh Sultan himself. The new Sports City will feature four state-of-the-art sports complexes designed to cater to a wide array of athletic activities, both team and individual.

At the core of the development will be the “Sports City Stadium,” described by Al Suwaidi as the “first nucleus” of the larger project. The stadium’s design aims to be an architectural icon, envisioned as a bird soaring over the sand dunes. Its structure will include a platform and grandstand that reflect the natural landscape.

The stadium’s standout feature will be its large cover, shaped like a bird with outstretched wings. This innovative design will change color throughout the day, gleaming silver in the morning and transitioning to a golden-red hue by night. This environmentally conscious approach aligns with the natural characteristics of the site and symbolizes the qualities of an athlete, such as keen eyesight, speed, and strength.

Al Suwaidi stressed that the stadium will meet all requirements to host local, regional, and international events and tournaments. He confirmed that, following the directives of H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, detailed designs for the Sports City Stadium will proceed immediately, with construction set to begin to ensure the facility is ready to serve the emirate’s sports community as soon as possible.
