Sharjah Residents Have Noticed A Spike In SEWA Bills

Farah Makhlouf

Nobody likes expensive bills but it is what it is. Typically during the summer months, bills increase because more water is used for regular showers and the AC is on lower to fight off the heat entering the home.

Residents in Sharjah have noticed that there seems to have been a spike in their water and electricity bills over the past few months

Sharjah residents took to ‘X’ to flag their concern over their doubling or even tripling bill.

Someone left a tweet tagging SEWA on October 17 saying “I received sewa bill double more than we use 1000AED this month. Every month my bill is 500-600 only. I complain to sewa online but no response. This is error or overcharge bill by sewa pls check.”

On October 22, someone else tweeted “I got our bill 2000 AED this month.. we pay bills regularly we are just 3 people living in the house.. from 7 am to 4 pm our house is empty we are at work and our son at school. Please check on that it’s highly impossible to get that kind of bill!”

SEWA responded to the tweets and is actively providing assistance and understanding of the outstanding bills. But what can you do to ensure your bill doesn’t spike that high?

Here are a few tips shared by DEWA:

  1. Switch off water heaters when it’s not in use.
  2. Set your fridge temperature to 4°C and freezer at -18°C.
  3. Use energy-saving bulbs or motion-detection lights.
  4. Set your AC to 24°C or higher if possible.
  5. When buying new appliances such as washing machines, purchase ones with a good efficiency rating (5 or 4 stars).
  6. Hang your clothes to dry instead of using the dryer.
