A 37-year-old Sri Lankan security officer is standing trial at the Court of First Instance for stealing a diamond stone worth AED73 million.
According to the records, the suspect, who worked at a company at the free zone of the Dubai International Airport, broke through three security gates to steal the rare 9.33 carat stone from the company’s vault.
After a former manager of the company reported the robbery, Dubai Police officers and investigators accessed the CCTV footage that clearly exposed the involvement of the security officer.
Public Prosecution Records reveal that after stealing the gem, the security officer handed the box to his compatriot relative, who also helped him smuggle the diamond out of the UAE through a cargo company by hiding the diamond in a shoe box. The relative is currently absconding and police are still searching for him.
Another Sri Lankan worker has also been arrested by the Dubai Police for giving the security officer refuge and allowing his home to use as a hideout in Sharjah.
The final verdict will be delivered on October 18.
