Up until now, the Saudi box office has been dominated by big-ticket Hollywood releases. But in the past 2 weeks, despite James Cameron’s epic “Avatar: The Way of Water” still running on screens, the Saudi wrestling comedy “Sattar” has trumped it for the number 1 spot on the domestic box office.

Variety reports that as of the 9th of December, the satirical actioner has drawn over 159,000 viewers and made $2.2 million (SR8.25 million).

This makes it the highest-grossing Saudi movie of all time, and it’s been in theatres for just two weeks. By the way it’s going, it looks like it will break more records in the days to come.

It will have its international release soon as well.

Sattar’s plot centres on Saad, who is driven to follow his boyhood passion of becoming a freestyle wrestler because of his failing personal and professional lives. When a video of him being beaten at the auditions is leaked, the dream quickly turns into a nightmare.

The previous highest grossing Saudi film of all time was “Born a King,” which was based on King Faisal’s diplomatic voyage to London in 1919, when he was just 13 years old.
