Louvre Abu Dhabi has unveiled Mamluks: Legacy of an Empire

It’s a dazzling new exhibition that explores the rich world of the Mamluk Sultanate, the powerful dynasty that ruled from 1250 to 1517.

 

The exhibition runs until 25 January 2026. It features over 270 artworks from 34 museums across 13 countries. Many are shown in the region for the first time, offering a rare glimpse into the splendor of the Mamluk era.

  • The Key to the Kaaba

One of the exhibition’s crown jewels, this sacred object bearing the name of Sultan Faraj once unlocked the doors of Islam’s holiest site. Its craftsmanship and symbolism capture the spiritual and political power of the Mamluk world.

  • The Basin of Saint Louis

You may recognize this gleaming brass basin, known as the Baptistery of Saint Louis. Made around 1330, it’s a stunning example of Mamluk metalwork, decorated with engraved knights, calligraphy, and hunting scenes. It’s making its regional debut, so don’t miss the chance to see it up close.

  • A Venetian Diplomatic Encounter

A 1511 Venetian painting shows European visitors being welcomed in Damascus. It’s a vivid look at Mamluk diplomacy and culture… Proof that global connections go way back!

  • The Mosque Lamp of Emir Qawsun

This 14th-century glass mosque lamp from New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art shows the elegance of Mamluk design. Its fine calligraphy and soft colors once lit up grand mosques.

This Egyptian carpet from the 15th century, part of Louvre Abu Dhabi’s own collection, radiates luxury. Its intricate medallion design and rich colours are a window into the refined taste of Mamluk patrons. It’s a reminder that even centuries ago, design was serious business.

  • Certificate of Pilgrimage for Maymuna

One of the most touching artefacts, this 1433 Hajj certificate belonged to a woman named Maymuna, daughter of Muhammad al-Zardili. It’s a personal document that bridges the sacred and the everyday, revealing how deeply faith was woven into daily life.
