84-Year-Old Swimmer Takes Home 7 Medals!

While some of us are complaining about unexplained back pain in our 20s and 30s, 84-year-old Michael Read is out here living his absolute best life.

The Ipswich local just returned from the Open Masters Games in Abu Dhabi with a literal hoard of medals around his neck, proving that age is genuinely just a number.

Read didn’t just show up to the games; he completely dominated!

Competing at an event that brought together over 25,000 athletes across 38 sports, he secured a massive seven medals in his age group.

Here is the breakdown of his winning streak:

  • Gold: 5km open water, 400m and 200m individual medley, and the 800m and 400m freestyle races.
  • Silver: 100m and 200m freestyle events.

He started swimming at 14 and was so good he made the team for the 1960 Olympics in Rome. But in a massive plot twist, he crashed his Lambretta scooter just days before he was supposed to get in the water, completely ruling him out of the games.

He clearly bounced back, though—he now holds an MBE for his services to swimming and is an official member of the International Swimming Hall of Fame.

As for what’s next, he has zero plans to stop. He is already looking ahead to his next ambition: a second world championship.
