Big news from the medical world in Abu Dhabi!
This complex surgery involved tackling a tricky tumour found during what started as a seemingly routine procedure.
A forty-eight-year-old patient in Abu Dhabi made history by being the first to receive robotic cytoreductive surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, known as HIPEC. Led by Doctor Yasir Akmal at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, a skilled team performed this intricate operation on a patient with a rare appendiceal tumour.

What began with symptoms similar to appendicitis took an unexpected turn for the patient. During the procedure to remove the appendix, surgeons found unusual jelly-like deposits inside the abdomen. Tests later confirmed these were a rare low-grade mucinous neoplasm. A mucinous neoplasm is a tumour that produces mucin, a gel-like substance in mucus.
This particular tumor, if left unchecked, can spread across the abdomen, leading to a serious condition nicknamed ‘jelly belly’. The complex surgery involved carefully removing several internal organs where the tumor had spread. Following the removal, the HIPEC treatment was administered.

HIPEC is a specialized chemotherapy method where heated drugs, specifically at forty-two degrees Celsius, are circulated directly within the abdominal cavity. This targeted approach helps eliminate any remaining cancer cells. Doctors highlighted the procedure’s ability to both prevent further spread and treat the existing condition effectively.
