Cloud seeding is a form of weather modification to increase a chance of rainfall. In the case of the UAE, they introduce salt crystals into clouds to encourage rainfall. Now, the National Centre of Meteorology is collaborating with the UAE Research Programme for Rain Enhancement Science to research cloud seeding.
The NCM and UAEREP named the project “Cloud-Aerosol-Electrical Interactions for Rainfall Enhancement Experiment (CLOUDIX).” Moreover, they two entities are investigating the effectiveness of various cloud seeding materials with and without electric charge.
That’s not all, the UAE is teaming up with US-based cloud physics research and instrumentation company, Stratton Park Engineering Company (SPEC). Furthermore, they will employ coordinated flight missions across UAE airspace and parts of Oman.
Also, they analyse data from optical array probes and scatter probes onboard the research aircraft. The research aims to observe natural secondary ice nucleation processes at high altitudes. Additionally, it contributes to boosting the effects of cloud seeding, leading to increased rainfall.
The research uses NCM’s cloud seeding aircraft alongside SPEC’s instrumented Learjet aircraft. Which received UAEREP’s Fourth Cycle grant for research on improving cloud seeding materials through electric charges.
