Here’s How You Can Get A Driver’s License In The UAE

Mayar Ibrahim

The UAE has fabulous public transportation, but nothing beats being behind the wheel of your own car. So, whether you’ve recently moved to the United Arab Emirates or grew up here, this is how you can get a driver’s license in this nation.

Buckle up ’cause these requirements are important to open your file for a Driver’s License

First, you must be of age to open your own file. Here are the required ages for the different licenses in the UAE:

  • 17 years for motorcycles and for vehicles for people with special needs
  • 18 years for cars and light vehicles
  • 20 years for heavy vehicles and tractors
  • 21 years for buses.

In every emirate, there’s AT LEAST one designated driving school for those to acquire a driver’s license. Below you will find a list of some of the driving schools in the UAE:

Abu Dhabi

Dubai

Sharjah

Ras Al Khaimah

  • Ras Al Khaimah Driving Academy

Fujairah

Once you’ve figured out what school you need to attend, you need to begin on gathering the required documents

The documents needed are:

  • Copy of passport and residence visa page
  • Original and copy of Emirates ID card
  • 2 passport sized photographs – 43×55 mm or 300×369 px
  • Eye test report – Please ensure that the optician you are visiting is approved by the traffic department of the emirate.
  • No objection letter from the sponsor (if required by the related traffic department).

You can begin the process of your application at the driving school of your choice by submitting all of the documents above. And ba-da-bing ba-da-boom, you now have an open file at the driving school!

Now that you have a file, you need to begin taking classes to prepare you for the tests required to get a driver’s license

First test is the theory test. This test covers the rules of the road and traffic signs and signals. Additionally, you can take the test in Arabic, English, Urdu, or Persian. When you pass the test, you’ll need to schedule in your practical driving and parking classes.

After scheduling your classes, you’ll also be assigned an instructor. So when attending your first practical class, your instructor will guide and teach you throughout the entire process of parking the car and driving on the road.

After completing all the required hours (varies from driving school and emirate), you will undergo a series of tests. These tests are depending on the traffic department of the emirate and the driving school, thus they include:

  • A Parking test assessed by the driving school
  • Parking test assessed by the traffic department
  • A Road test assessed by the driving school
  • Road test assessed by the traffic department

If you fail a test, you will be required to register for extra classes before you are eligible to retake the test. Once you complete all the tests required, you’ll then receive your very own driver’s license!

Remember, stay vigilant on the road and safe driving!
