The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court sentenced a woman to five years in jail. The court also imposed a fine of AED 500,000 on charges of inciting hate speech. The UAE has a strict law against hate speech and discrimination.
Law No. 02 of 2015, criminalises any acts that stoke religious hatred and/or which insult religion through any form of expression. Whether it is speech or the written word, books, pamphlets or via online media. Penalties for violation of the various provisions of the law include jail terms of 6 months to over 10 years. It also includes fines from AED50,000 to AED2 million.
The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court issued the judgement in the presence of the woman. The court served her a fine of AED 500,000 and 5 years in jail. Furthermore, she will be deported after serving her sentence.
The court ordered the confiscation of the mobile phone used in committing the crime. Furthermore, they deleted the offensive video from her phone and social media account where she posted it.
The authorities also closed the woman’s social media account and permanently banned her from using any “electronic information system”.
