A pearl was recently discovered in Abu Dhabi’s Marawah Island, dating all the way back to 5,800 to 5,600 BC.

History continues to be discovered in our neighbouring Emirate’s island that was once the ground where a Stone Age village once sat. The gemstone is believed to be 8,000-years old and was found on the Marawah Island, just off the coast of Mirfa town, a good 170-kilometre drive west of Abu Dhabi city.

Archaeologists say this could be evidence that pearl trades existed earlier than what was originally thought

The oldest known natural pearl in the world was discovered by DCT archaeologists who had been working at a Neolithic site on the Marawah Island.

The ‘Abu Dhabi Pearl’ will be added to the Louvre Abu Dhabi Museum’s upcoming exhibition

…called ‘10,000 Years Of Luxury.’ The exhibition will open on October 30, in case you’re interested in seeing the pearl up-close-and-personal. Following its display, the stunning pearl will then be transferred to the Zayed National Museum, that is currently under construction on Saadiyat Island.

The pearl’s discovery (and age) shows that Neolithic nomads didn’t just know how to navigate, find food but also make jewellery and create art

Archaeologists from the Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi used carbon dating to determine the era that the pearl came from.
