Why The Wathba Salt Lakes Are Still Taking The Internet by Storm
You’ve seen these vids on Instagram… now learn more about these breathtaking lakes in Abu Dhabi,
The ‘gram friendly Sale Lakes are located in Al Wathba, which sits in the capital’s outskirts.
The crystal clear blue waters contrast effortlessly with the red desert sands surrounding the man-made structure creating a picturesque desert oasis scene that has captured everyone’s attention, and mobile screens. The channel that feeds water into the lakes is man-made, yet surprisingly the salt deposits have resulted naturally within the water and now allow us to take the most glorious pics.

If you plan to visit, you’re advised to be careful as the crystalline salt formations that look so very cool can become slippery or even break off.
Visitors and resident Instagrammers have taken up the responsibility of advising other prospective visitors to clean up after themselves and ensure that they do not break of salt pieces as souvenirs.
However, the Salt Lakes isn’t the only attraction in the area as there are many more sights to see. The Salt Lakes are only a short drive away from the Fossil Dunes, the Al Wathba Wildlife Reserve, the Al Wathba Cycle Track Lake, Sheikh Zayed Heritage Festival, Al Wathba Hill, and Al Wathba Desert Resort. There is a lot to do in the area, and it would make for a perfect weekend plan with friends, but if you do visit, make sure to respect the site and just have fun!

Al Wathba is open to the public, and the best part is that it is entirely free to visit.
You can reach Al Wathba by taking a 40-minute drive from Abu-Dhabi, and along with the Abu Dhabi- Al Ain highway, you will find the diverse suburb of Al Wathba.
The Wetland Reserve is the only protected site in the area as it houses an array of protected flora and fauna. There are self-guided walking trails available to ensure that visitors can enjoy bird watching while maintaining a safe distance to not disturb the animals.
Visitors must stay on the walking path, and there are signs posted for everyone’s convenience.
In the other areas, such as the Fossil Dunes and the Salt Lakes, visitors are free to explore but should not disturb or break off pieces of rock or salt from these natural wonders as they are fragile and because they could potentially injure you. There are roads that lead to all of the Wathba wonders, so as long as you have your car, the trusty GPS, some sun protection, and water, you’re good to go.Â
