The UAE Sends 51 Tonnes Of Aid To The Philippines

Mayar Ibrahim

On Sunday, the Mayon Volcano erupted in the Philippines. When a volcano awakens from its slumber, a chain of events is set in motion, leading to a display of nature’s fury. The eruption begins with seismic activity as the tectonic plates beneath the Earth’s crust shift and collides. Thus generating immense pressure that ultimately ruptures the volcano’s surface.

The Mayon Volcano spewed lava and sulfuric gas which led to the evacuation of 13,000 residents in the Philippines

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recommended everyone within a 6-kilometre (3.7-mile) radius of the Mayon Volcano be evacuated. This evacuation comes due to the danger of rockfalls, landslides and ballistic fragments. Additionally, Phivlocs stated that aircrafts should not fly over the volcano.

They also provided the possible hazards that can occur:

  • Rockfalls or landslides or avalanches
  • Ballistic fragments
  • Lava flows and lava fountaining
  • Pyroclastic density currents
  • Moderate-sized explosions
  • lahars during heavy and prolonged rainfall

After the displacement of thousands of people in the Philippines, the UAE extended a helping hand

The United Arab Emirates is the first international country to provide relief and send aid supplies to the Philippines. The volcano eruption displaced thousands of people, mostly children, women, and the elderly.

Mohamed Obaid Al Zaabi, UAE Ambassador to the Republic of the Philippines, said:

“Sending aid to the Philippines comes as an extension of the strong relations between our two nations in several fields and embodies the UAE leadership’s keenness to contribute to alleviating the severity of disasters and humanitarian crises around the world. This underscores the UAE’s established values in strengthening the international response to crises and disasters, providing for peoples’ basic needs – especially food supplies – required by affected populations, and delivering urgent relief to countries in times of need.”
