Replaying the 90’s – The Zemanna Exhibit
A time characterized by the presence of street vendors, colourful neon-lit dukkan signs. A time of simplicity where life moved at a slower pace.
This unique Abu Dhabi exhibition is giving major nostalgic vibes! Take a quick trip down memory lane with this exhibit that features a reconstruction of life in the 1990s in the UAE.
This exhibition is curated by Munira Al Sayegh with Dirwaza Curatorial Lab and features artists are Afra Al Dhaheri; Aisha Al Ahmadi; Alaa Edris; Fadel Al Mheiri; Ghada Al Sayegh and Maytha Al Shamsi; Jumairy; Mays Albaik; Rawdha Al Ketbi; and Sree.
The artworks and installations of the 10 artists revives periods of their childhood, with each room in the exhibition taking you down a different trip through memory lane to a time before our current technologically dominant era.
The exhibits’ multiroom experience helps highlight experiences such as the re-rooting of migrating families into the UAE, and the role of pop culture, media, and play. From how the 1990’s became what they were to the ripple effect caused by that era of rapid transformation!
The exhibit also features an inside-out football field along with the various renderings of rooms from the 1990s. You can expect random items from that era such as bulky televisions and clunky pieces of early technology you’ve probably never seen before! (Gen Z, yes you!)
