Paying tribute becomes a powerful means of honouring someone’s memory and celebrating their life. This time-honoured tradition allows individuals to come together, sharing their grief, love, and respect for the departed. On Sunday, July 2, Peter Hellyer passed away peacefully in Abu Dhabi.
Paying tribute provides solace, closure, and a lasting legacy for those who have left an indelible mark.
Aged 75, Peter Hellyer passed away peacefully in the capital of the UAE. He had a decades-long association with the nation since the 1970s. Moreover, Peter Hellyer moved to the UAE to develop documentaries on the overseas visit of the founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan.
He later helped establish the English-language service of Wam, the state news agency. Also, he set up a foreign language radio broadcasting for Abu Dhabi. Peter Hellyer served as managing editor of the Emirates News newspaper. He was a long-term information adviser to the National Media Council.
Furthermore, he was awarded citizenship for services to the nation and in 2013 received an Abu Dhabi Medal. This medal is the highest honour that can be bestowed upon a civilian in the emirate, for his work in identifying key archaeological sites in the UAE.
This included the discovery in the 1990s of a Christian monastery on Sir Bani Yas island. Hellyer’s death was confirmed by his family and tributes poured in on social media and elsewhere paying tribute to his rich legacy.
