On November 14, the UAE and Indonesian presidents inaugurated the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Solo, Indonesia.

His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Indonesian President Joko Widodo performed prayers together at the mosque. Moreover, Sheikh Mohamed then signed a commemorative plaque to mark the opening.

After the prayer and signing of the plaque, the UAE and Indonesian rulers ended the visit with a tree-planting ceremony

They both planted the tree at the Mosque’s courtyard at the end of the inauguration.

They named the mosque in honour of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan

The mosque shares design elements with the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi. In addition to the elements of the SZGM they added traditional Indonesian influences. Also, they constructed the mosque using local materials.

The mosque can accommodate 10,000 worshippers. Additionally, it contains 56 domes and four minarets, along with 32 columns in the main prayer area.

H.H. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed expressed his happiness and pride in the opening of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Moreover, he said the mosque represents the depth of the longstanding bonds between the two nations.

Also, he recalled the late Sheikh Zayed’s fondness for Indonesia and its people, and his historic visit to the country in 1990.
