Ramadan is finally here, and Abu Dhabi is ready to welcome its special traditions like cannons! From sharing iftar, giving to those in need and pausing for gratitude, the spirit of the month is everywhere.

One really cool thing to look out for is the daily firing of cannons at sunset, also called Midfa Al Iftar.

These aren’t ordinary cannons! They’re QF 25-pound cannons that fire empty cartridges to signal it’s time to break the fast. This exciting tradition actually originated in Egypt and made its way to Abu Dhabi in the 1970s, adding a unique and fun twist to Ramadan here in the city.

The cannons are also fired twice to mark the start of Ramadan and twice again to celebrate Eid Al Fitr.

Here are seven iconic locations across the emirate where you can catch the cannon firing:

  • Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: Watch the Midfa Al Iftar with the stunning mosque as your backdrop, and even join thousands for Iftar in the mosque’s tent.
  • Qasr Al Hosn Fort: Abu Dhabi’s oldest historical landmark. Catch the cannon firing here and experience the tradition in a truly authentic setting.
  • Umm Al Emarat Park: A popular green space in the capital, perfect for enjoying the peaceful atmosphere as the cannon marks sunset.
  • Al Shahamah (Formula parking area): A designated spot to witness the cannon firing in this Abu Dhabi neighborhood.
  • Al Maqta Museum: A beautiful cultural spot that celebrates Emirati history and a pretty special place to catch the Midfa Al Iftar cannon in action!
  • ADNOC Gardens, Al Dhafrah: Located in Abu Dhabi’s far west, giving residents a chance to experience the tradition.
  • Jahili Fort in Al Ain: Built in the 1890s and restored in 2008, this historic fort is another iconic location to catch the cannon firing.
