A simple Instagram scroll turned expensive for a man in Abu Dhabi after he fell for a misleading recruitment ad. The post promised domestic worker placement services, and the man paid AED7,000 upfront, but the maid never showed up.

The case quickly made its way to court, and the ruling was crystal clear: the scammer must return the AED7,000 and pay an additional AED7,000 in compensation for financial and emotional harm

Total payout AED14,000…whoopsss!

Evidence presented included a prior criminal conviction and messages exchanged between the two parties. Reported via Gulf News, the court cited the UAE Civil Transactions Law, highlighting that taking someone else’s money through deception is not only unlawful, but also carries responsibility for both material and moral damages.

The takeaway? Always verify recruitment ads online… and if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is

A reminder that in the UAE, courts take scams seriously, and victims can get justice — sometimes with a hefty payout for damages.
