In a bid to further stimulate tourism growth and bolster its events sector, Abu Dhabi has announced an extension of the waiver on the 10 percent tourism fee typically charged to event organisers.
The decision, made by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT), will remain in effect until December 31, 2024.
Saleh Mohammed Al Geziry, the Director General of Tourism at DCT, emphasized that this move is a strategic component of the emirate’s overarching plan to amplify its growth trajectory. The waiver aims to provide ongoing support to event partners and organisers, who play an integral role in the flourishing tourism and entertainment landscape of Abu Dhabi.
“Abu Dhabi’s year-round line-up of events consistently attracts visitors from around the globe. The extension of the tourism fee waiver until the end of the year is part of our efforts to accelerate our growth and provide continued support to our event partners and organisers, who are integral to the tourism and entertainment ecosystem of the emirate,” stated Al Geziry.
While the waiver alleviates some financial burdens for event organisers, it’s important to note that they are still required to adhere to certain regulations. This includes obtaining event licenses through the Abu Dhabi Events Licensing System, declaring event-generated revenues, submitting financial statements, and cooperating with designated revenue auditors appointed by the DCT.
This extension of the tourism fee waiver is just one among several recent initiatives aimed at fortifying Abu Dhabi’s tourism and events industry. Additional measures include reduced tourism and municipality fees for hotels, as well as policy updates facilitating the conversion of farmhouse properties into holiday homes and allowing landlords to obtain multiple licenses for different units. These collective efforts underscore Abu Dhabi’s commitment to fostering a vibrant and thriving tourism ecosystem while enhancing its appeal as a premier destination for visitors worldwide.
