This prestigious recognition underscores Abu Dhabi’s outstanding commitment to environmental protection and climate action, spearheaded by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) over several years.
Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), expressed profound pride in Abu Dhabi’s selection as the Arab Environment Capital for 2023. He attributed the emirate’s remarkable achievements in environmental stewardship and climate action to the visionary directives of the UAE leadership, particularly President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
“Abu Dhabi is a pioneering leader in sustainability, in full alignment with the UAE’s vision and commitment to fostering a sustainable and prosperous future. This was reaffirmed by the announcement of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, that 2024 is the Year of Sustainability once again,” Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed remarked.
He further emphasized that this accolade is a testament to the collaborative efforts of governmental and private entities, sectors, and institutions in Abu Dhabi, united in their mission to safeguard the environment and preserve its natural resources. This collective approach draws inspiration from the forward-thinking legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who prioritized environmental conservation and sustainability.
Abu Dhabi’s designation as the Arab Environment Capital for 2023 was announced towards the end of the previous year by the Secretariat General of the Arab League. This recognition acknowledges the emirate’s extraordinary endeavors in environmental protection and its implementation of various initiatives and projects aimed at enhancing people’s quality of life. These efforts are grounded in the pursuit of sustainable development and the preservation of natural resources throughout the region.
The decision to honor Abu Dhabi was made during the 34th session of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for the Environment, held in Muscat the previous year. Notably, this event coincided with two significant local and global milestones: the UAE’s declaration of 2023 as the Year of Sustainability under the theme “Today for Tomorrow,” and the UAE’s hosting of COP28.
