Two oil tankers were targeted in suspected attacks in the Gulf of Oman after distress calls were sent out to the US Navy on Thursday.
According to several reports, the International Tanker Management that handles the MT Front Altair said it heard explosions which caused a fire aboard the ship.
Distress calls made to the Fifth Fleet, stationed in Bahrain, were made at 6.12 am and the other at 7 am.
According to The National, the ship had just left Ruwais, an Emirati port on Tuesday and was meant to reach the Taiwanese port of Kaosiung by the end of the month. The vessel has been loaded with oil in Abu Dhabi before leaving for its journey to Taiwan.
The second tanker, however; was leaving from Saudi Arabia’s Al Jubail port- supposedly headed to Singapore by June 22.
As of now, no confirmations have been made on how the attacks took place and by whom.
