The backstory

The White House said the H-1B visa program, meant to bring in highly skilled temporary workers, has been misused by some companies to replace American workers with cheaper, less-skilled labor. Officials argue this abuse has hurt both the U.S. economy and national security.

To fix this, a new rule requires H-1B applicants to pay a $100,000 fee to enter the US—a huge jump from the current fee of around $1,500. The change takes effect on September 21, 2025, and will last for 12 months unless extended.
