The World Government Summit is taking place in Dubai right now.
The annual meeting, which hosts over 150 countries, invites governments from all over the world to open a dialogue discussing futurism, technology and innovation which this year has been attended by Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, and French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe.
The summit is in full swing at the Souk Madinat, and a speech about climate change made by US actor Robert De Niro is causing massive debate.
From hurricanes to droughts, millions are suffering. Climate change is a real threat. #ItAffectsYou. Robert De Niro takes part at the #WorldGovSummit to help combat climate change and its impact on humanity during our Climate Change Forum. Stay tuned. pic.twitter.com/masOhemUpN

“I feel at home at #Barbuda & I want to be a part of the solution. These places have virtually no #carbon footprint but face the consequences. We need to build #sustainability” – Robert De Niro, Academy-Award winning Actor, Director & Producer @worldgovsummit #itaffectsyou pic.twitter.com/3CKpsAM2er

He thanked the UAE for their sustainable work and said the UAE is an example to the rest of the world, which was warmly received by the audience.
However his comments about the US are causing much debate on Twitter..
In the speech he also said “I flew here last night from a backward country” … “It is a place where science once reigned. It has been replaced by ignorance.”
This got mixed reviews…
Climate change needs to be a bipartisan issue. It’s ridiculous that republicans try to deny it.
