The seismic event was said to be the result of a 5.9 magnitude earthquake that had struck southern Iran the same morning, which the NCM recorded, but said it was not felt in the UAE. Anything measuring five or higher in magnitude is categorised as ‘strong’. Earthquakes are rare in the UAE, but tremors related to quakes elsewhere in the surrounding countries, mainly Iran, are a common phenomenon.
