The US Has Announced New Visa Application Rules

If you’re applying for a US visa, there’s an important update you need to be aware of.

The US Department of State has changed the rules about where you can attend your visa interview

Now, all nonimmigrant visa applicants must have their interviews in their home country or country of residence. The previous option to book interviews in third countries — often chosen because of shorter wait times — is no longer allowed.

This applies to major visa types like visitor visas (B1/B2), student visas (F-1) and work visas (H-1B, O-1, J-1)

You’ll need to prove that you live in the country where you’re applying. If you try applying outside your home country or residence, it might be harder to qualify for a US visa. Plus, if your application is denied, the fees won’t be refunded or transferable.

Wait times for visa appointments vary depending on location

If you apply outside your home country or residence, expect longer waits for interview slots. That said, if you already have a visa appointment booked, it usually won’t be canceled.

Some visa categories are exempt from this rule, such as diplomatic visas, official travel visas, and rare humanitarian or emergency cases.

To avoid surprises, always check the US embassy or consulate website in your country for the latest information on requirements, appointment availability, and any updates before applying.
