The US National Security Advisor spoke to reporters in Abu Dhabi today and blamed Iran for the recent sabotage of Saudi oil tankers in Fujairah, according to Reuters.
The US, who recently deployed more troops to the region, is ‘almost certain’ the naval mines came from Iran. Saudi Arabia has also made the same judgement, while the UAE has remained neutral on the matter.
Nobody was injured in the attacks that took place in UAE waters earlier this month.
The comments come ahead of the emergency summit in Saudi taking place on May 30 to discuss the recent attacks, amid rising tensions in the region.
Saudi had previously blamed Iran, although Iran has denied any involvement.
“I think it is clear these (tanker attacks) were naval mines almost certainly from Iran”…
“There is no doubt in anybody’s mind in Washington who is responsible for this and I think it’s important that the leadership in Iran know that we know.”
