In a significant development, the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, met with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, on the sidelines of the 54th World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The focus of the meeting was the cabinet’s decision to reshape Iraq’s future relationship with the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).
According to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the decision to redefine the relationship comes as Iraq completes the establishment of robust constitutional institutions and fulfills its international obligations. Al-Sudani emphasized the country’s commitment to continue cooperating with the international organization, particularly in addressing pressing issues such as desertification, climate change, and water scarcity.
The Prime Minister also delved into global concerns, including the impact of the recent conflict between Israel and Hamas on regional and global stability. Al-Sudani expressed gratitude towards Guterres for his efforts in halting and appreciated the UN Secretary-General’s stance in support of the Palestinian cause.
Al-Sudani reiterated Iraq’s unwavering position regarding the right of the Palestinian people to live in dignity on their land. The discussion further touched upon the ongoing genocide by the Israeli army against the Palestinian people, with both leaders acknowledging the severity of the situation.
In response, Guterres expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people and affirmed the United Nations’ commitment to continuing efforts to bring an end to the conflict in Gaza and alleviate the suffering of innocent civilians. The meeting reflected a shared dedication to addressing not only Iraq’s internal affairs but also pressing global issues affecting the international community.
As Iraq takes steps to redefine its relationship with the UN, the outcomes of this meeting may signal a new chapter in the country’s diplomatic engagements and its role in contributing to regional and global stability.
