Iraq Reshapes Future Relationship with UN

In a significant development, the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, met with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, on the sidelines of the 54th World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The focus of the meeting was the cabinet’s decision to reshape Iraq’s future relationship with the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

According to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the decision to redefine the relationship comes as Iraq completes the establishment of robust constitutional institutions and fulfills its international obligations. Al-Sudani emphasized the country’s commitment to continue cooperating with the international organization, particularly in addressing pressing issues such as desertification, climate change, and water scarcity.

Al-Sudani reiterated Iraq’s unwavering position regarding the right of the Palestinian people to live in dignity on their land. The discussion further touched upon the ongoing genocide by the Israeli army against the Palestinian people, with both leaders acknowledging the severity of the situation.

In response, Guterres expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people and affirmed the United Nations’ commitment to continuing efforts to bring an end to the conflict in Gaza and alleviate the suffering of innocent civilians.
