A surge in offensive place names stems from angry football fans venting their frustrations after the October 10, 2024, World Cup Qualifiers match between Bahrain and Indonesia. The match, which ended in a 2-2 draw, sparked a major dispute among fans. Indonesian supporters, particularly on social media, accused the referee of unfairly adding extra time, which they believe gave Bahrain an unfair advantage, allowing them to secure the equalizing goal.

The controversy has fueled tensions online, with fans taking to digital platforms to express their outrage.

Unfortunately, some have resorted to altering place names on public maps to mock or insult Bahrain in response to the outcome

Public maps of Bahrain started displaying offensive and inappropriate names for various locations, with terms like “pig” and translations for “stupid” and “idiot” showing up across different spots. These inappropriate map edits have only added fuel to the fire, with many Bahraini citizens condemning the offensive terms and calling for swift action to restore the integrity of their country’s map.
