Egypt’s Supreme Council for Planning and Urban Development (SCPUD) has recently given the green light to a renovation project for the historic Giza Zoo. The project aims to preserve the zoo’s ancient trees and significantly expand its animal collection from 71 to 186 species.
The refurbished zoo will be divided into themed sections representing Africa, Asia, and America, where animals will be grouped according to their continents of origin. Additionally, there will be safari areas, a bird aviary, and a dedicated space for elephants.
As part of the renovation, a new night experience zone will be introduced to allow families to enjoy the zoo for longer hours. The project also prioritizes the preservation and enhancement of over 5,000 old trees within the zoo grounds, as well as the improvement of animal shelters, walkways, and water features.
Interactive animal exhibits will be a highlight of the revamped zoo, offering engaging experiences for visitors. The number of attractions will increase from three to 14, with more shows and educational centers for children.
Notably, the zoo’s historic gate and iconic hanging bridge, designed by Gustave Eiffel over a century ago, will also undergo restoration. The project has received approval from the African Association of Zoos and Aquaria (PAAZA), the Permanent Committee for Islamic and Coptic Monuments, and the National Organization for Urban Harmony.
*The zoo closed for renovation in July and will take 18 months.
