For the past few weeks, rumors about the Israeli Actress Gal Gadot playing Cleopatra flooded Social Media and especially, Twitter.
People on Twitter expressed their concern regarding the Israeli actress playing such an important and historical Egyptian character.
Most of the backlash was directed toward how Western countries are trying to appropriate and falsify Egyptian history, and civilization, especially after The Cleopatra Documentary on Netflix.
However, Gadot didn’t seem to be fazed by the backlash she received and confirmed to Vogue Hong Kong that she would be going forward with the movie and that she aims to change the narrative surrounding Cleopatra only being a seductress.
Gadot, mentioned in her interview with Vogue that she hopes to give Cleopatra an appropriate portrayal as she grew up with it being a “household name” since Egypt and Israel share a border.
She further explained that she grew up with the misconception of Cleopatra only being a seductress and only having an affair with Julius Cesar and Marc Anthony, until she started reading historical books.
“You know, if Wonder Woman is the imaginary strong female leader, Cleopatra’s actually the real one,” the actress told Vogue Hong Kong.
