The Egyptian singer Omar Kamal sparked significant controversy on social media after seeking an opinion on the permissibility of earning money from singing.
His request came in a video posted on TikTok during a live broadcast with his audience, where some accused him of earning “haram” (forbidden) money from his singing, suggesting that his charitable works might be unacceptable.
In response to these accusations, Omar Kamal clarified that he supports over 50 families, including his own and the musicians he works with.

He expressed his disapproval of the attacks, questioning the contributions of those who criticize him in helping others. He stated, “If my money is haram, what have the people criticizing me done? Have they helped anyone or paid for medical procedures or rent?”
Omar Kamal emphasized that he is committed to performing charitable acts discreetly, not for the sake of fame or attention, and assured that he does not showcase these charitable endeavors on social media.
He also voiced his frustration over the discussions surrounding the legitimacy of his earnings, noting that the ongoing criticism has been mentally exhausting for him. He called on Al-Azhar to clarify the stance on accepting charitable works if the funds come from singing.
Additionally, he noted that if Al-Azhar states he is wrong and that his funds are “haram” he would stop his charitable activities, which led to even more backlash against him on social media.
