Twice a year, the Islamic calendar comes alive with vibrant celebrations on the 15th of Sha’ban and the 15th of Ramadan.
Called Gargee’an, this word has two meanings in Arabic: “knocking on the door” and “a mix of tasty sweets and nuts.” Originally about giving gifts, now it’s all about the day itself. Kids dress up nicely and excitedly go from house to house hoping for yummy treats.
Girls wear beautiful clothes with bright colors and shiny decorations, topped with golden headpieces and traditional shoes.
Boys usually wear white or fancy thobes with a cap or the special Saudi headscarf, the ghutra, feeling proud with it on their heads.
