The testing involves having a safety driver behind the wheel, building on earlier trials on closed tracks. This trial signifies progress in the RTA’s aim to pioneer autonomous transport in the MENA region.
In this latest testing phase, the RTA and Cruise are teaming up to comprehensively evaluate the safety and performance of autonomous driving in the bustling streets of Dubai, specifically Jumeirah. Additionally, they will closely monitor the vehicles’ performance and adaptability to the dynamic traffic conditions that define Dubai’s roads. This multifaceted assessment will play a crucial role in further advancing autonomous transport in the city.

Cruise’s technology uses a high-resolution map of the physical environment
Cruise self-driving taxis use over 40 sensors for a 360-degree view, even spotting objects hundreds of feet ahead and around double-parked cars. These sensors, including LiDAR, cameras, and radars, provide data on pedestrians, bikes, cars, signs, road conditions, and more.
By the year’s end, TEN automated taxis are set to take passengers for rides, marking substantial progress toward their ambitious goals.
