We’ve seen the videos and the pictures and my oh my how one action can domino effect to a big disaster. We’re talking about the Tour de France crash of 2021.

A fan with a sign was the cause of the major pile up of the race that took place on Saturday June 26, only 8km from the end of stage one. She was standing on the roadside of the Tour’s opening stage but the sign was in the way of the cyclists.

The fan was holding a cardboard sign to show up on TV when it accidentally hit cyclist Tony Martin, causing him to fall along with dozens of other cyclists

French authorities are opening an investigation into the Tour de France crash

The race’s video coverage showed that the sign hit German cyclists Tony Martin. Due to Martin’s fall, it created a pile up with dozens of other cyclists to fall behind him. The fall held up the face for several minutes.

French law enforcements have opened an investigation into the cause of “unintentional injuries….by manifestly deliberate violation of an obligation of safety or prudence.” according to CNN.
The woman who was holding the sign fled the race before the investigators arrived. 3 cyclists have withdrawn from the race, including German rider Jasha Sutterlin who was involved in the accident. His team concluded that Stutterlin was taken to the hospital for examination. He has no broken bones but suffers from severe contusions to his right wrist.

The cyclists of the Tour De France are on Twitter, thanking their fans for their support but also dropping some facts

Jasper Stuyven, a Belgian professional racing cyclist, took to Twitter to remark on the crash. “On a serious note though; great to see still many spectators are loving our sport and cheering for us, but please, stay on the side of the road, not on the road!”

Daryl Impey, stage winner at the Tour de France also had some things to say on the accident. “Once again, spectators, destroying months of hard work. We love the fans but not the ones who put up signs in the front of the peloton and don’t realise the consequences of their actions. Hope the guys are OK.”

The Briton, a four-time Tour de France champion, Chris Froome also thanked his fans for their constant support. He was among the worst affected by the crash. He managed to leave with no fractures but definitely got some bruises and swelling. Froome stated he will try to get through the second stage of the Tour De France.

The Tour de France was won last year by Slovenia’s Tadej Pogacar who was racing for UAE Team Emirates

A 21-year-old rider from Slovenia won the Tour De France racing for UAE Team Emirates! Tadej Pogacar became the second-youngest rider EVER to win the historic race. He took his number one podium position, proudly waving the Slovenian flag and donning the yellow jersey emblazoned with the UAE flag and Emirates logo.

The Tour was postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions and this was their restart! It certainly had a rocky start this year but we hope the cyclists recover quickly and smoothly.
