If you’re a big fan of Asian food, Toshi should be on your list of places to try. It’s a pan-Asian restaurant that holds themed buffet nights, meaning diners get to experience dishes from Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan and China. Great for the indecisive amongst us!
Located on the 18th floor of the Grand Millenium Hotel, diners can enjoy a pleasant view in a relaxed environment. To be fair though, whether you’re facing the windows, or the buffet, the views are just as good.
Like a predator eyeing its prey, the seasoned buffet-goer knows to properly survey the selection before diving in. It really is worth having a walk around first, as you could easily miss the separate dim sum room (and we don’t want that now, do we?)
The vibe is really chilled out – low lighting and Eastern décor, we’re talking lots of cool, mini statues and bamboo sticks – making it a great place to chill out. The location also makes Toshi a good venue for after-work drinks and dinner, if you fancy something a little different from the surrounding bars.
We went along for Chinese Night. There was a wide selection of items and the food was really good. The dim sum and sushi were well put together and a great way to start the meal.
Now, salad and Chinese cuisine are hardly mutually exclusive, but again, there was an impressive variety with an Asian twist – think squid and crab with beansprouts and chillies. The highlight though, was the chicken salad, which was basically just chicken, albeit with a few spring onions thrown in.
Overall, the food was really well executed. The wide range is one of the main reasons to check Toshi out. There are no limitations and you get to try a little bit of everything. The hot appetisers, including chicken toast (unconventional) were lovely and what Chinese is complete without prawn crackers? They were available in abundance.
The mains included chicken, meat and fish accompanied by noodles and rice. The beef was tender and one of the best items on offer, alongside the duck. The presentation was neat and the buffet was easy to get around, even when more diners flocked.
The international dessert counter was truly extensive, but only a few items really stood out. The raspberry jam cup and the banana mousse were the best sweet dishes and the little servings were great. Toshi made it easy to fit in a little bit of everything without needing the elasticated waistbands!
Being a buffet, its nice to be able to pick and choose what, and how much, you eat. On the whole, the food was really nice and setting was relaxed. The bar provided the perfect setting to chill before doing the back and forth to the buffet and it’s a nice alternative venue for mid-week catch-ups.
If you’re in the mood for Asian food, Toshi won’t disappoint you. Just make sure you go hungry and buffet-ready.
