Residents Spill 16 Life Hacks For Moving To Dubai

Avatar

Every country, city, town, and or province has its quirks and inner workings. Dubai is no different. The city that caters to a cocktail of nationalities may not always be the easiest to navigate for newbies in town.

SO, for those coming in fresh and new to the city of gold, here are a few LIFE hacks/pro-tips brought to you by none other than Dubai residents themselves to help you cruise through your time here in D-town.

Vignesh Shetty took to the popular discussion website Reddit to ask a very relevant question: “For someone who is planning to move to Dubai or has just moved here, what are some Pro-Life hacks or Tips everyone MUST know to make life easier here?”

And the internet has NOT disappointed with answers.

16. Download the Dubai Now app to take care of all your bills and other government admin in one place

15. Make sure you get your landlord to clean the ACs at least once a year or they leak and destroy your ceilings. Same with pest control visits or ants will get in

14. The desalinated water can be tough on your hair – buy a water filter for your shower head and remember to change the cartridges

13. Take your time to choose a bank. Different ones offer different side benefits like discounted movie tickets, meals, taxi rides to the airport or valet parking at the mall

12. Carry small notes of cash to tip service workers – especially in places you frequently visit. Also, tip your cleaners or gift food to maintenance/front desk /security staff

11. Avoid wearing thin sandals or going barefoot on a pavement in midsummer. Your feet will be sorry. The same applies to walking your dog (if you have one)

10. The speed cameras trip after 20 km/h over, don’t hang in the far left lane; please use your indicators, and the traffic app WAZE works better than Apple Maps

9. Dubai has companies that will come to you to refill your petrol (Cafu) and replace dead batteries (800BATTERY) or burst tyres

8. Don’t swear or drink in public (illegal) and don’t photograph people without their permission (also illegal)

7. If you are moving and you don’t have an international license (or license from Dubai itself) try to stay slightly close to the metro or any public transport areas cause moving around without a car is a pain… and cabs cost a kidney per kilometre.

6. Take a photo of everything that’s broken in your new apartment before you sign the contract and sent it to the landlord/agent and tell them this was already broken and ask them to fix it cause otherwise, they will be hesitant to give your security deposit back.

5. There are a few OTP scams; if someone calls you from a random number telling you that they are from the Dubai Police and “we have sent an OTP message, please tell us the OTP”, do not share it.

4. Whenever you feel low or lonely, sip some Karak

3. Abu Dhabi has recently changed speed limit rules. The speed limit written on the signs in Abu Dhabi is the exact limit without the 20kmph buffer. Hence, if it says 80 and you go 81, you get fined.

2. Get a Nol card for public transport

1. Use UDrive/Ekar instead of cabs
