Over 30,000 Artillery Shells Have Been Cleared from Omdurman Already

Avatar

In a significant post-conflict recovery effort, the Khartoum state government efforts have successfully cleared over 30,000 shells and small ammunition from 2.6 million square metres in Omdurman, the third-largest city in the Sudanese capital.

This operation is part of the ongoing efforts to restore normalcy in areas severely affected by the fighting between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that began April of last year.

Civilians have suffered the consequences

The fierce fighting has continued for over 500 days

The entire country has been witnessing intense clashes between the Sudanese army and the RSF – the aftermath, has left a trail of destruction in many neighbourhoods, damaging homes and causing civilians to flee.

As the Sudanese army begins to regain control of different areas, Khartoum state institutions relocated to the Karari locality, where the National Mine Action Center has spearheaded clearance operations, extending efforts into the Umbada neighbourhoods too.

There’s still a lot of work to be done

Despite the success of the operation, 470,627 square metres of land still remain uncleared in Omdurman, including areas where homes have been sealed by their owners. Authorities are continuing their efforts, but challenges persist as artillery shelling intermittently targets these areas, with some health facilities being hit in the process.

The people of Sudan still remain committed to making the country safe once more, but the road to recovery is still ongoing as sporadic conflict continues to threaten stability in affected areas.
